An epidemiological study on burned patients admitted to Imam Mousa Kazem hospital, Isfahan, 2003-2004

Background and aim: Burn affects physical, social and economical aspects of patients and their families. The first step in confronting any disease is gathering data from its various aspects. Methods: This descriptive and retrospective survey was performed on 1124-burned patients admitted to Imam Mousa kazem hospital of Isfahan. Sampling method was census and all the burned patients hospitalized for more than a day were entered into the study. Results: The sample consisted of 60.3% males and 39.7% females. The mean age was 23.3 years and the mean of the burn percentage was 33.9%. The highest percentage (41.2%) of the patients fell into the 16-30 years age group and the least percentage (9.3%) fell into the over 50 year’s age group. The most common cause of burn was kerosene (28.6%) but flame (kerosene, gasoline and gas) comprised 63.2% of the causes. About (63.4%) of the burns occurred at home and the most common season for burn was winter (29.1%). About 15.9% of the patients died. Conclusion: Regarding information from this study, we can recognize risk factors, high-risk groups and epidemiological aspects of these types of accidents for planning a prevention program.
