The effects of Fe4NiO4Zn nanoparticles on thyroid tissue and serum level of T3, T4 and TSH

Background and aims: Nanoparticles are widely used in building construction, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food industry due to their small size and unique physicochemical properties. Increased production and use of synthetic nanoparticles lead to growing concerns about their negative side effects on human health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Fe4NiO4Zn nanoparticle on thyroid tissue and serum level of T3, T4 and TSH.

Methods: In this study of experimental, 24 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups of 8 rats. Control group received 0.5 ml saline. Group 1 and 2 received 0.5ml of solution containing 100 and 200 ppm Fe2NiO4Zn for 7 successive days. Serum concentration of TSH, T4 and T3 were evaluated 2, 7 and 14 days after treatment. On the 14th days thyroid tissue was removed and used for histological assessment.

Results: IP injection of Fe4NiO4Zn caused a significant decrease in the serum level of TSH and a significant increase in the serum level of T4. Fe4NiO4Zn had no effects on serum T3 level. Fe4NiO4Zn caused the thyroid Follicul to become inflamed and enlarged.

Conclusion: Fe4NiO4Zn nanoparticles can affect Hypothalamic-pituitary- endocrine axis and affect the damage of the thyroid Follicul on the level of TSH and T4 hormones.
