Background and aims: Testes are composed of very active body tissues, which can be affected by exposure to radiofrequency waves. Age of exposure may also be an important factor. This study was carried out to evaluate morphological parameters of rat sperm exposed to microwave radiation at pre and post puberty.
Methods: For this experimental study, 18 adults (2 month years old) and 18 prepuberty (1 month years old) male rats were selected and each group divided in two subgroups, control and test group. Test groups were exposed to 2450 MHZ microwaves produced by microwave oven (LG brand), three times a day, and 30 minute each times. Control groups were kept in laboratory at same temperature and light condition. After 60 days, all animals were killed and testes were removed and epidydimal sperm was used for morphological study.
Results: The result showed a significant decrease in the number of epididymis sperms of test group compared with control group (P=0.042). Percent of dead and abnormal sperms in test group had a statistically significant increase compared with control group (P=0.047) and (0.45). There was no significant difference between mature and prepuberty exposed rats.
Conclusion: Exposure to microwaves leaked of microwave oven has deleterious effect on morphology of epidydimal sperm.
